Neighborhood Information:
- Powel's catchment extended this academic year as a result of neighborhood school, Drew Elementary, closing.
- Powel's location is between the neighborhoods of Powelton Village and Mantua
- The history of Samuel Powel Elementary has its roots in the late 1950s when community members protested that there was no neighborhood school for their children. Parents and residents fought until they were granted the property where Powel is today. When demolition of the original property began, residents of Powelton Village were so passionate about maintaining green space for their new school that they chained themselves to the trees to prevent them from being uprooted (Johnson and Wise, 2003). Today, Powel enjoys a shady schoolyard and greenery.
